Almond Szelet Queen Gisela’s
Gisela, daughter to the Duke of Bavaria, strengthened the alliance between Bavaria and the Kingdom of Hungary when she married Stephan, heir to the Hungarian throne, in 997 A.D. After Stephan’s death, Gisela returned to Bavaria and joined the convent of Niedernburg Abbey in Passau as an abbess. Her grave can still be visited in the convent church. Our double-baked “Mandelszelet” is a typical Bavarian-Hungarian speciality that symbolizes the strong historical connection between the two countries.
